Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx represents the return of one of the most loved series by gamers. This game is designed by Valve for virtual reality and, as you know, will be compatible with most VR headsets.

The new Half-Life Alyx literally catapults players to City 17 and offers one of the most wonderful gaming experiences ever. To help you get started with the game, this guide gives you some useful tips to help you better prepare for the challenges that await you.

Helpful tips for getting started with Half-Life: Alyx

  • Don't waste ammo - Weapon is a valuable item in Half-Life: Alyx, especially shot cartridges that are difficult to find. For this reason, it is important not to waste shots when there is no need to shoot, e.g. B. to destroy the boxes (which you can break with your own hands). Keep your cartridges safe when you really need to shoot all your firepower on enemies.
  • Upgrades - During the game, you can upgrade your weapons with a range of devices and tools. Our advice is to give priority to the capacity of the shotgun magazine and an automatic shotgun magazine so that you have a good hand in the most difficult clashes. Even if you test to purchase the first available upgrades, such as the laser sight, it is more suitable to keep the resources to upgrade your weapons.
  • Health stations - Health stations help you stay alive by reloading your vital points. After using one, you can always go back and keep using it until it's used up. Always remember this if you suffer damage from conflict.
  • Tripmine - On the way, you will face several Tripmines that hang on the surfaces. You can defuse them all if you want, but in some cases, the most creative solutions can help you. For example, you could throw a chair by hitting the cable (while keeping a safe distance), or, even better, making sure that the mine is triggered by an enemy to kill it after the explosion.
  • Puzzles - Half-Life Alyx also marks the return of environmental puzzles. Some of them will be very difficult and require good skills, but sometimes the solution can be found easily by simply changing your attitude in the real world to have a clearer view on the problem to be solved. Always keep this in mind when you are having difficulty to solve a puzzle.

Half-Life: Alyx best settings

First of all, to get an amazing gaming experience, you must have a good VR headset. The performance of the game also depends on exactly what type of virtual reality you are using.

Different headphones have different refresh rates. Where Valve Index can go up to 144Hz, Oculus Rift S has a limit of 80Hz and if we look at HTC Vive Cosmos headphones, they are limited to 90Hz.

Now we need to know the requirements for this virtual reality experience to be a success for you and for that, there are some settings that you should consider.

Therefore, you must have a PC that meets certain requirements. You can play Half-Life Alyx if your PC meets these requirements. Below are the requirements of your PC.

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600
  • RAM: 12GB RAM
  • Graphics: GTX 1060 (6GB) / RX 580 (8GB)

To play Half-Life Alyx, your system needs to be more powerful. Its minimal Nvidia GPU is just the 6GB GTX 1060, which has been the most popular graphics card for quite some time according to Steam Charts, and its CPU requirements aren't very modern either.

For example, if you're using the Intel Core i5-8600K CPU at stock speeds, 16GB of RAM, and Asus GeForce GTX 1060 OC 9Gbps Edition, which also has the latest Windows 10 updates, game updates, and card drivers graphics installed.

Using the HTC Vive Cosmos due to its higher 90Hz refresh rate compared to the Oculus Rift S '80Hz display is also a good option. We are setting this up to test Half-Life Alyx.

There is a refresh rate of 90Hz which is equivalent to a frame time of around 11ms for the HTC Vive Cosmos. Above this number, the headphones will operate more slowly than their 90Hz refresh rate.

It will hit that 90Hz refresh rate if it's faster than 11ms. The higher the graphics settings, the harder it is for your PC to work to achieve the ideal frame timer.

You have four graphics options in Half-Life: Alyx including Low, Medium, High, and Ultra. All four quality settings have their High or Ultra Texture settings, ensuring visual equality regardless of the graphics card you have on your PC.

Open the advanced performance settings menu where you have extra Ultra texture settings but Ultra's default option is set to High like everything else.

Shadows, character details, fog, particle effects, audio details, and rag count differ between each quality setting. Low has the flickering light, soft fabric and high-quality hologram options disabled, which is why Half-Life: Alyx won't feel so creepy as a result.

If you have GTX 1060, then it's fine if you stick with Low or Medium when playing on a Vive or Oculus Rift. If you are looking for the ultimate atmosphere, or playing on a valve index, and want to take full advantage of its 120Hz and 144Hz refresh rate options, then you need a more powerful graphics card.

Using the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti SC Gaming card to verify how something more powerful in Nvidia's old GTX 10 series family handled the game. Half-Life: Alyx is preset to high quality and seems more comfortable there. It can go up to 14ms, but it's not like the GTX 1060 card.

Ultra travels around a similar frame time between 13-14 ms. High / Ultra Half-Life Experience: Alyx should probably be equipped with an RTX 2070 or RTX 2070 Super.
