Halo 5 Game Review

Halo 5 is a first-person shooter game in which players can visit several different planets, commanding a squad of several Spartans. The game also has a multiplayer mode, divided into several different modes. Halo 5: Guardians is the fifth part of Microsoft's sci-fi shooter, continuing the story of the Master Chief and his battles against the enemies of humanity in the wideness of space. In the centre of the plot - two teams of "Spartans", the Blue Team of the Master Chief, and the Osiris squad of Jameson Locke, which confront each other. In the centre of the confrontation is AI Cortana, who was considered dead after the events of the fourth part.

Halo 5 Gameplay

The gameplay in Halo 5 is dynamic from start to finish. You will not be bored. Heroes, the Master Chief, or the Spartan Locke fights not alone, but in a team. Together with each of them, three more Spartans fight. The Chief's team is blue, Locke's team is red. Such "coloured" divisions in the plot are arbitrary, but in multiplayer arenas, the costumes of the fighters literally turn red and blue.

Note that a support team is not at all useless. Theoretically, the game can be completed without shooting at all. By the way, if your hero takes more damage, any member of the support team will be able to "revive" him. True, in some cases nothing will help the fallen hero.

A certain time is allotted to revive a fighter. If the time is up, the fighter is considered dead. If the hero "died". Indeed, instead of artificial intelligence, the support team can have your real-life friends playing on their Xbox One. You can communicate with them using a headset.
As for the weapons, there are a lot of powerful weapons here. It is worth killing some monster - and, with rare exceptions, his weapon can be picked up. There are no boxes with universal ammunition here - and this is good. Halo 5 retains the spirit of the good old Halo. Where you have to constantly change weapons, picking them up on the battlefield.

The new aiming system will allow players to zoom in with any weapon. This system is used in many modern shooters. By the way, in the early versions of Halo, there was no accurate aiming at all. And indeed - with right aiming, it is somehow more convenient.

During development, 343 Industries has set itself the main goal - the frame rate should never fall below 60 FPS. By the way, similar requirements were applied when creating Forza Horizon (1, 2), only there it was about 30 FPS. The minimum game resolution is 1152x810 pixels, the maximum resolution is 1920x1080 pixels.

REQ system

The REQ system is designed to reward players for being active in multiplayer mode. After completing matches, you are given points that can be spent on purchasing special REQ cards. With their help, it will be possible to unlock various weapons, armour, vehicles, ability enhancements, etc. More than a thousand different REQ cards will be available for collection. This system is also used in the new "Warzone" mode. There are special stations in military zones where you can spend REQ cards to purchase weapons, vehicles, and enhance abilities.

Halo 5 Warzone Mode

Halo 5 introduces a new MOBA-style multiplayer mode called Warzone. It is a large battle for 24 players, with elements of PvE and PvP. On a large map, a battle takes place between two teams of 12 people each, as well as friendly and enemy NPCs for both teams. The main goal is to score a thousand victory points. Scoring is carried out by killing opponents, defeating bosses and their minions, or capturing an enemy base. You can also win if you destroy the base belonging to the enemy. A typical Warzone match can last up to half an hour.

Halo 5 Arena Mode

If the new Warzone isn't impressive, Halo 5 features the classic 4v4 mode found in previous games in the series. Arena Mode includes the following game types: Breakout, Fortress, Slayer, and Capture the Flag.

  • Breakout - Teams fight until one of them wins in five rounds. Players only have one life per round and weak shields, so it's easy to die. The round ends when all members of one of the teams are dead.
  • Slayer - Players only need to complete one goal - to kill as many enemies as possible in the allotted time.
  • Stronghold - This type of game requires a team to capture and hold control of three points on the map. The first team to score one hundred points wins. It is important to note that the scoring occurs only while controlling two or more points.
  • Capture the Flag is a classic game mode known to veterans of the series. To win, a team must capture the opposing team's flag and take it to their base.

Halo 5 Esports

Halo 5 tournaments began with the first instalments of the series, but only Halo 5: Guardians and associated world championships can be credited to a serious esports discipline. The prize fund of the Halo World Championship 2016 amounted to 2.5 million. The 2017 World Championship raffled off $ 1 million between the teams. And also, there are many more regional tournaments in the USA and Europe. There, teams are fighting for more modest money. The minimum of such tournaments is 15 thousand dollars. The maximum is 200 thousand.

According to the publisher, esports is a key element of Halo 5: Guardians. For example, European and North American players fight each other weekly in tournaments like the Halo World Championship and Halo Championship Series.

In early 2020, America hosted the DreamHack Halo Series Anaheim 2020, with a prize pool of $ 50,000.

Well-known eSports organizations from the USA have strong rosters. Among them are Splyce, Team EnVyUs, Team Liquid, Evil Geniuses, and Luminosity Gaming. It is worth noting that the game (and therefore the tournaments for it) is only available on the Xbox One console.
